As with the previous two movies based upon C.S. Lewis books, Voyage of the Dawn Treader continues the story of good verse evil. Not feeling at home with their aunt and uncle, Edmund and Lucy desire to have yet another adventure. Hearing of Peter and Susans adventure in America does not ease their yearnings. As they are not at home and desiring another adventure, Lucy and Edmund must find their way into Narnia.

Once arriving in Narnia, Edmund and Lucy learn of relative peace happening in all the Narnia. If they were not called and Narnia is experiencing peace, why have the two Pevensie children found themselves in Narnia?

While outside of Narnia, Edmund and Lucy longed to be in Narnia because they are not at home. Why are they not at home? Perhaps their world, like Narnia at times, is defined by a conflict between good and evil. As long as a struggle between good and evil exists, one is not at home in that world. This is because one knows that there should be peace and home is where evil is not.

Lucy and Edmund quickly learn that 7 seven former Lords have disappeared. Caspian last knew that they were on the Lone Islands. Having sailed to the Lone Islands Caspian, Lucy, and Edmund learn peace is not present in all of Narnia. Only finding one of the seven former Lords, the three discover that evil is slowly triumphing in Narnia as one person at time vanishes in a strange mist. As it turns out the mist is controlled by the powers of evil present in Narnia and the only way to return peace to the land is defeat of evil powers.

The former Lord believes the rest sailed off in search for the mist. Lucy, Edmund, and Caspian believe it is their duty go off in search of the other six Lords and defeat the evil in the East. As they sent out their longing is for peace to return to Narnia and to be at truly at home. Along the way the three discover temptation by the things their hearts desire. Is being as beautiful as another person, having gold and silver, and obtaining power as satisfying to heart as we believe.

Seeking to bring peace back to Narnia, while combating temptation by the evil forces, Lucy, Edmund and Caspian must identify what they truly desire. Only when giving up the desires they want along the way, will they find the source to defeat evil. While they want to defeat evil and return peace to Narnia, Edmund, Lucy and Caspian discover they cannot achieve victory alone. In giving up what they want in life for the true desire of peace in Narnia, they find Aslan and his power.

Although Edmund and Lucy are high king and queen of Narnia, they serve as king and queen not by any merit of themselves. Only in giving up of themselves are they king and queen. Through this voyage Lucy and Edmund discover what life is and lifes meaning. More importantly, they discover that they can be at home outside of Narnia because Aslan promises to always be with them and He will bring them to Him at the end of time. Thus, for Lucy and Edmund to be king and queen is it to give up the position to another or keep it.

I walked out of the theater so thrilled to have spent my money on a Nicholas Cage movie. Its not often that happens.

I heard from a unenthusiastic review about the on screen shenanigans with Nick Cage and Ron Perlman were so enjoyable that it made the rest of the movie bearable. Going in with that anticipation, I found myself not only pulled into their characters fun and convincing friendship but also into an intense and yes even edge-of-your-seat suspenseful movie. I forgot about my troubles for the day and enjoyed a good adventure.

It was inspired, yes, by DnD, video games, and a number of other swords and sorcery books and movies that preceded it, but it is its own story. In a market saturated with sequels, prequels, reboots, comicbook diarrhea, etc. its nice to see a story that is its own, however simple.

Yes it plays by the numbers. You know guys will die. Hell, you probably know who and in what order, if youve seen movies of its ilk. You know there is a supernatural bad guy. And you know there will be one liners, oh are there ever one-liners! But the characters are fun to watch, even a little engaging. You may not want to see them die. I didnt. They werent a group of scum with a bullseye for heraldry. The enemy was threatening and tricky, a real danger to our protagonists. And the one liners were, gasp, funny! Yes, even Nicholas Cage is worth the price of admission here. If this was just another paycheck role for him, he looked like he was having a lot of fun with this roll. And I dont know about you, but I like to see my actors have fun in a movie that costs me 9-12 bucks to see..

It looses some points with me for the CGI. obvious CGI is obvious. But honestly the crispy gray CGI contrasting against a darker, colorful, moody lighting STILL didnt detract from the encounters or the climax. If you come to the movies to have CGI convince you that magic and demons are real, you come to the movies for jaded and asinine reasons. If you wanna see pretty visuals with a meandering pointless story, go see Tron.

But if you wanna see a fun yet dark heroic adventure, go see Season of the Witch!

Kevin Flynn is the CEO of Encom and the worlds best video game developer. One night he simply vanishes without a trace and leaves his company in chaos and his young son. Fast forward 20 years, Sam Flynn is a rebellious 27 year old and a thorn in the side of Richard Mackey, a suit trying to take over his fathers company with the help of a software designer. Though Sam is the heir, he refuses to play an active role in the decision making process. Alan Bradley meets him one night with the news that he has received a page from Kevin Flynns arcade, a number that has been disconnected for 20 years. Thus ensues the inevitable investigation into his fathers whereabouts and Sams transportation into the world his father has created and been trapped in for decades.

Where to begin? Tron Legacy is a visual feast for your eyes and an auditory pleasure thanks to Daft Punk and Joseph Trapanese. The soundtrack feels ethereal almost and fits perfectly with this new world we have been introduced to for the first time.

What the movie makes up for in spectacular imagery, it lacks in storyline. Maybe I should have watched the 1982 version as so many people have pointed out to me but even without it, the plot seems a little disjointed. The underlying connections to the real world are numerous such as The Holocaust, God complexes, evil doppelgangers and more. You are left with more questions than answers as it is never revealed just what it is about this world that would, change everything, in the real world.

Jeff Bridges is great as both the villain and hero and his computer animated self is simply amazing. The acting overall is not anything to write home about but Hedlund as Sam Flynn holds his own against a more charismatic Jeff Bridges. Quorra provides a potential love interest and the key to changing our world and a doe eyed innocent view of life that is endearing.

This is a movie that should be simply taken for what it is, a pandering to the original fan base whilst garnering new ones, one not to be over analyzed but simply to be marveled at with a group of friends. The actions scenes are just jaw dropping with light cycles and deadly Frisbees amongst other things. Disney took a risk to continue a series almost 3 decades later rather than going for the easy option of reimagining it. A wise move

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a lot better than most movies inspired by popular video games, one which thrills and delights for many of its 100 minutes. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer, Prince of Persia is light years ahead of, say, Final Fantasy in terms of clarity and coherence, and millions of dollars more expensive-looking than the Resident Evil movies.
Persia also has an impressive, superstar-studded cast, with A-listers Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina emoting in the sandy adventure epic, and fast-rising newcomer Gemma Arterton as the obligatory love interest. In the end, however, despite its glorious special effects, breathless battle scenes, and exotic, romantic setting, you realize that Prince of Persia is yet another instantly forgettable summer yarn.
The story is about the efforts of Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) of Persia and Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) of Alamut to protect a powerful, magic dagger from falling into the wrong hands. Powered by magic sand, the dagger has the ability to take its user back in time, making it a weapon that any army would kill to possess. Among the casualties is King Sharaman (Ronald Pickup), who dies gruesomely when a robe he puts on burns him to death. Fighting to get the time transporting dagger from Dastan and Tamina are Nizam (Ben Kingsley) and Sheik Amar (Alfred Molina). Though they begin as adversaries, Dastan and Tamina predictably end up in each other’s arms before the end credits roll.
I had high hopes for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time because it was directed by Mike Newell, the filmmaker who made my favorite Harry Potter movie, The Goblet of Fire. After being mesmerized by Goblet, I immediately wanted to see it again. After watching Prince of Persia, though, I could only wonder, "What happened to Mike Newell?"
Nothing in Prince of Persia is brilliantly staged, no scene worth chatting about with fellow movie geeks. The closest thing to coolness which the movie exhibits is a sequence where Gyllenhaal scales a very high and very smooth wall with the aid of arrows being fired at him every few seconds by fellow Persians. It lasts only for a few seconds, but it’s as ingenious as the scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers where Legolas uses a piece of wood as a skateboard to slide down the steps of the castle at Helm’s Deep while firing arrows at the bad guys. But I won’t give too much credit to the filmmakers for Persia’s wall-climbing scene, because it may very well have come from the Prince of Persia video games which have been around since 1989.
The film’s videogame origins may also explain why Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton, more often than not, emote more like two-dimensional computer-generated people than the flesh and blood human beings they are. None of the scenes they share have any sizzle, and they have no emotionally-charged scenes that stay with you after the movie’s over. In fact, Arterton’s performance as Tamina will give you a constant feeling of déjà vu, because it recalls her work as Io, the love interest of Sam Worthington’s Perseus in the recently-shown Clash of the Titans. Gyllenhaal at least looks like he’s enjoying his first outing in a mega-budgeted special effects adventure. But then again, there are quite a few Pixar-created characters like the grumpy old man from Up who have shown more emotional depth than Gyllenhaal exhibits in this movie.
The script certainly deserves some of the blame for not giving Dastan enough qualities to make the audience care about him. There’s a scene at the start of the film which shows Dastan and other members of the Persian army trying to attack Alamut. After Dastan says that the main gate is "impossible" to penetrate, we see him moments later getting through it without difficulty. The way the sequence was handled robbed Dastan of sympathy, because if he could do the impossible without breaking a sweat, he can do anything, right? This scene then had me wishing that Jake Gyllenhaal’s Prince Dastan character would later exhibit traits that would make him as endearingly human and as flawed as Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
That’s the main problem of Prince of Persia- in its best and worst moments, it triggers memories of many other movies, from Indiana Jones and the Lord of the Rings trilogy to The Golden Compass. Just as quickly, however, you realize that all those movies were better than this one.

'Avatar' soars to new box office record

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - – Science-fiction epic "Avatar" soared to a new global box office record, taking in 1.85 billion dollars and sinking "Titanic" to become the biggest earning film of all time, figures show.
"On Monday, January 25, 'Avatar' officially passed 'Titanic' to become the highest grossing film in history at the worldwide box office," 20th Century Fox studios said in a statement.
Remarkably, "Avatar" director James Cameron had only himself to beat, and by Monday his groundbreaking 3-D blockbuster had taken in 16 million dollars more than his own 1997 film "Titanic," leaving him with the two biggest movies of all time.
"Avatar" had taken 1.859 billion dollars, compared with the box-office total for the Oscar-winning "Titanic," which took 1.843 billion dollars, the studios said in its statement.
"It's official: the king of the world is the king of the world again," box office analyst Jeff Bock told AFP.
"Like the ship itself, many observers thought 'Titanic's' record box office was unsinkable. Not so. Leave it to the captain of the ship, James Cameron, to sink his own vessel and resurface with a whole new world."
The 500-million-dollar epic has been hailed as a cinematic milestone for its use of state-of-the-art 3-D cameras and motion capture technology which Cameron was instrumental in helping to develop.
Set on a distant planet called Pandora, in the heart of a vast tropical forest, it recounts how strife erupts between an indigenous tribe and an Earth-based consortium pillaging for a precious mineral.
"I see it as a broader metaphor, not so intensely politicized as some would make it, but rather that's how we treat the natural world as well," the Canadian-born Cameron said at last month's premiere in London.
"Avatar" walked away with the best picture and best director at the Golden Globes this month, cementing its status as a front-runner for the Oscars, with the nominations due to be unveiled next week.
"We are deeply gratified that so many millions of people around the globe have embraced Avatar," 20th Century Fox said.
"The themes of protecting the environment, respecting life, and yearning for a peaceful planet have united moviegoers worldwide."
In China, the 2D version of the movie was pulled ahead of schedule Friday amid reports that the government wanted to make room for a patriotic biopic, "Confucius."
Even so, it set a Chinese box office record, and enthusiasm for the film was so great that officials in a city in central Hunan province named a mountain after it.
The futuristic fantasy tells the story of paralyzed war veteran Jake, who is sent on a mission to Pandora where, through his genetically engineered avatar body, he falls in love with a blue humanoid named Neytiri of the alien Na'vi race.
Instead of helping the US military to extract the valuable mineral from the ground, Jake (Sam Worthington) and a crusty doctor, played by Sigourney Weaver, decide to help the Na'vi defend their homeland.
It was Cameron's first movie since "Titanic," which starred Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet, scooped 11 Oscars at the 1998 ceremony.
But box office analyst Bock pointed out that "Avatar" rocketed to its record in just 39 days, while "Titanic" sailed across screens for 41 weeks to reach its total.
He added that 72 percent of the global box office had come from 3D venues.
Cameron accepted his Golden Globes speaking partly in Na'vi -- the language spoken by the blue-skinned peace-loving alien heroes of the film invented for the movie by a University of Southern California linguistics expert.
"Cameron is that rare combination of movie magician and master tactician. his films aren't just unspooled, they are unleashed. In the end, they are spectacles and you have to see them to believe," said Bock.
"His films don't follow the worn path, they blaze trails and become part of the cultural zeitgeist of the day."
